The goal of National Safe Boating Week is to encourage a boating lifestyle that is fun, safe, and enjoyable.

Ready, Set, Wear It Life Jacket Events teach boaters about the importance of always wearing a life jacket – with a bit of fun along the way! These events are hosted by Safe Boating Campaign partners around the world and may be a standalone event or incorporated into other local outreach efforts. Events may be offered once, twice, or multiple times throughout the year! Local partners are encouraged to plan a #RSWI2019 event any time between May 1 and October 31.

According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s recently published annual summary of boating accidents in Arkansas, people who spent time on the water last year saw a 9 percent decrease in boating accidents and a 36 percent decrease in the number of boaters who died from boating accidents.

It may not feel like boating season yet for many of us, so keep your edge and take a safe boating course. Many education providers and partners offer discounts or other incentives for students who enroll in or complete a boating safety course during the week of March 17-23, 2019. Boats under 26 feet will have to include engine cutoff switches, thanks to the U.S. Coast Guard’s Authorization just passed by Congress.The Frank Lobiondo Coast Guard Authorization of Act of 2018, among other things, has a provision requiring “manufacturers, distributors and dealers” to install engine cutoff switches on new boats “less than 26 feet overall in length and capable of developing 115 pounds or more of static thrust.” The engine cutoff switch provision “includes, but is not limited to, inboard engines, outboard motors and sterndrive engines.” Switches also need to meet American Boat and Yacht Council Standards.
