Following a search process that began in October 2017, the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) has named Peg Phillips as the organization’s new executive director.
Using the adjective “grass-roots” has become quite the trend in recent years, and rightfully so. Things like grass-roots marketing and grass-roots political campaigns have made an impact in today’s society, and the recreational boating safety community is no exception to this trend.
On November 29 (Tue). 2016, Mr. Hiroshi Yamaoka a Maris foundation staff member was present at the Japan Coast Guard meeting. He provided a presentation on the benefits of standardization and educational outreach. As a Personal Water Craft (PWC) subject matter expert (SME), he was selected as one of four elect expert members whom were appointed to the newly formed “Ocean Safety Promotion Advisor”.
Corporal (Cpl.) Underwood of the Saint Johns County Sheriff’s Office is the recipient of the 2016 NASBLA Boating Safety Award, sponsored by the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC), for his efforts to promote responsible boating throughout Florida. As Florida continues to be the top state for recreational boating deaths and
accidents, this is no easy task. Cpl. Underwood’s dedication to the profession, and especially to boating safety, has made a positive change in the local boating community and boaters now know him know him as “the life jacket guy.”
The National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) has joined thousands of other organizations participating in #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Occurring this year on November 29, GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday to kick-off the holiday giving season and inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.

The Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) and National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) gathered at the 2016 CSBC Symposium to bring greater attention to boating safety issues currently being addressed throughout North America and to show their shared commitment to these issues and the promotion of safer boating with a signing of the CSBC – NSBC Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on September 25, 2016.

The National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) has released resources through its Saved by the Beacon campaign for recreational boating safety professionals to educate
recreational boaters about the importance of 406 MHz beacons and how to use them correctly in the case of a boating emergency.
The National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) Board of Directors recently approved the broadening of our membership with the creation of three new categories: Instructor, Instructor-Trainer, and Engaging Victims & Survivors. The creation of these membership types was a result of feedback received by current and prospective members
and a belief that they will enhance the overall mission of the NSBC.
As part of a nationwide observance, the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) is encouraging individuals to partake in Welcome to the Water on June 11, 2016 as part of National Marina Day. The NSBC encourages local boaters and non-boaters to spend a Saturday at a marina near them hosting an event for Welcome to the Water for a day of
leisure on the water.
Local teenager, Jack Ezzell, who witnessed the tragic death of his girlfriend last summer while knee boarding on Lake Norman, organized a boating safety event at The Peninsula Yacht Club on Saturday. Ezzell created the event to raise awareness about the need for safe and sober boating practices on Lake Norman and to share the difficult lessons he has learned about the hazards of operating marine craft while under the influence.
The National Safe Boating Council (NSBC), in partnership with the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) hosted a Boating Safety Congressional Reception on May 11 in the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.
