Manassas, VA (May 6, 2015) – Millions of Americans will enjoy boating with family and friends this year. To ensure a fun, safe time on the water, the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) National Weather Service (NWS) are proud to continue their partnership to promote new weather and boating safety public service announcements (PSAs) for National Safe Boating Week, May 16-22, 2015.

“What looks like a perfect day for boating can quickly become hazardous if you end up in the water or if bad weather moves into the area,” said Rachel Johnson, executive director of the NSBC, the lead organization for Wear It! “You never know when there may be a boating mishap, so it’s important that everyone onboard always wears a life jacket and practice boating safety. This includes checking the weather forecast before going out for
the day, and keeping an eye on changing weather.”

The NSBC and NOAA developed seven public service announcements to be played throughout National Safe Boating Week. Topics include: boating under the influence, marine forecasts, life jacket wear, safe navigation in fog, fire extinguishers, thunderstorm safety, and hurricane preparedness.
The PSAs and additional information can be found at SafeBoatingCampaign.com and nws.noaa.gov/os/marine/safeboating.

“Before leaving shore, all boaters need to know the forecast so they can be weather ready and avoid a dangerous situation,” said Louis Uccellini, Ph.D., director of NOAA’s National Weather Service. “Weather forecasts are essential for making safe boating decisions and they may even save lives.”

Weather forecast and warning information from NOAA’s National Weather Service is available through more ways than ever, from the NOAA Weather Radio to apps and mobile websites on smartphones and more.

NSBC and NOAA will collaborate with other boating safety groups and organizations to encourage safe boating on the water during National Safe Boating Week and throughout the 2015 boating season. The NSBC is proud to be a NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador.
