Sea Scout Base Galveston is recognized for its educational outreach program

Sandestin, FL (April 1, 2015) – The National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) is pleased to recognize Sea Scout Base Galveston as the winner of the 2015 Boating Safety Youth Program Award, sponsored by BoatU.S. Foundation. Sea Scout Base Galveston received a trophy and cash prize of $2,500 to enhance its 10-week youth-oriented boating safety program, Reach. In addition, they received an allexpense paid trip to present at the International Boating and Water Safety Summit in Sandestin, Florida,
March 29 – April 1.

“NSBC, in partnership with BoatU.S. Foundation, is proud to support the Boating Safety Youth Program to help encourage safer boating to our nation’s youth,” said Chris Edmonston, Chair of the NSBC and President of BoatU.S. Foundation. “This year’s winner developed a strong educational program that combines classroom knowledge with a hands-on water program so students can put their classroom learning to the test.”

The Boating Safety Youth Program Award is designed to recognize organizations and individuals that have created and successfully implemented innovative youth boating education programs targeting safety issues and concerns of national interest. For a youth boating program to qualify, it must integrate safety practices into the program and be aimed at students less than 18 years of age.

Sea Scout Base Galveston’s Reach program gives students classroom knowledge followed by hands-on experience with sailing. The program works to instill in its students a love for learning and exploration of the maritime world. Reach offers a variety of year-round boating safety programs dedicated to the development and promotion of the maritime industry.

Reach is easily adaptable for others to develop in their own area, with special emphasis placed on key boating safety issues targeting youth. For more information, please contact Abigail Hils at (409) 572-2561.
